The number of permits issued for new privately owned residential construction is an excellent indicator of growth and economic vitality.

New building permits in Allegheny County began to rise in 2011 and peaked in 2015 with building permits for 2,957 total units. Since 2015, the number of permits have declined with 1,990 units approved in 2017.
