Poverty rates in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area are below average when compared to the benchmark regions.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 10.8 percent of Pittsburgh residents were below the poverty level in 2016, a decrease of 1.5 percent compared to 2015 and the second-largest decrease of all benchmark regions.

The share of children under the age of 18 in poverty was 14.4 percent in 2016, a decrease of 3 percent compared to 2015 and the largest of all benchmark regions.
