Foreign Born Population

Pittsburgh has the smallest percentage of foreign-born residents of all the benchmark regions at 3.8 percent, down 0.1 percent from 2015.

The percentage of Pittsburgh’s foreign-born population that arrived in the United States in 2010 or later, however, was 33.2 percent in 2016, up 3.9 percent from the year before.

International immigration has been comparatively low in the Pittsburgh region for the last several decades. Low overall job growth and relatively inhospitable economic conditions have dampened the flow of immigrants into the region. Most of the foreign-born population in the Pittsburgh region arrived decades ago. The foreign-born population as a percentage of the whole is one of the lowest in the nation.

The recent foreign immigration measure shows the percentage of the foreign-born population with a year of entry into the U.S. of 2010 or later.
